Celebrating Burundi’s 62nd Independence Anniversary and 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations with the Netherlands

On Saturday, July 6th, 2024, the Embassy of Burundi in The Hague, in collaboration with the Burundian diaspora in the Netherlands, hosted a grand celebration to mark two significant milestones: the 62nd anniversary of Burundi’s independence and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Burundi and the Netherlands. The event took place at the residence of the Burundian Ambassador, located at Zijdeweg 42, 2244 BE Wassenaar, and was attended by representatives of Duch ministry in charge of foreign affairs, numerous diplomats, representatives of international organizations and diplomatic missions and many other distinguished guests.

Welcoming Remarks and Gratitude

 

 

 

 

 

H.E Ambassador Isabelle NDAHAYO began her speech by expressing profound gratitude to God and conveying heartfelt thanks and welcomed everyone present on behalf of Burundian people living in the Netherland and her own behalf. The theme of the 62nd anniversary of Burundi’s Independence, “The only guarantee of effective freedom is financial independency,” resonated throughout her address

 

 

Honouring Heroes and Emphasizing Patriotism

The Ambassador highlighted that the event was not only a celebration but also a tribute to the heroes who fought for Burundi’s sovereignty, particularly Prince Louis Rwagasore, the hero of independence and an opportunity for evaluation of the level of independence achieved up to now.She emphasized the importance of patriotism, urging Burundians to love their country and work diligently towards the Vision of Burundi: “Burundi an emerging country in 2040 and a developed country in 2060”.

At regional level, she informed about Burundi’s contributions to regional and international missions to maintain peace and security, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. Lastly, she informed about the effect of climate change in Burundi.

Acknowledging International Friendship

She acknowledged the presence of various diplomats, from international organizations and diplomatic missions and representatives from the Dutch government, especially a representative of Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Martine van Hoogstraten, the Deputy Director of the Sub-Saharan Africa Department. According to the Ambassador, the attendance of a representative of the minister symbolizes the strong bond and brotherhood between Burundi and the Netherlands. She reiterated her commitment to strengthening and widening bilateral relations between the two countries. Furthermore, she highlighted Burundi’s current situation and opportunities for tourists and investors and called  them to visit and invest in Burundi. At regional level, she informed about Burundi’s contributions to regional and international missions to maintain peace and security, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. Lastly, she informed about the effect of climate change in Burundi.

Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Address

 

Following the Ambassador’s speech, a representative from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the stage. He described the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Burundi and the Netherlands as a success story. He reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to continue working with Burundi and to strengthen their relations through more development projects, underscoring the spirit of cooperation and mutual growth.

 

 

A Night to Remember

The celebration continued late into the night, featuring vibrant performances by Burundian cultural drummers, singers, and traditional dancers. These performances created an unforgettable atmosphere, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Burundi and the joyous spirit of the occasion.

 Looking to the Future

The event was a powerful reminder of Burundi’s journey towards independence and its ongoing efforts to achieve financial independency. It also underscored the enduring friendship between Burundi and the Netherlands, promising a future of continued collaboration and shared success.

As the night ended, attendees left with a renewed sense of patriotism and hope for Burundi’s future, inspired by the Burundi Vision set forth by the government.
